Colitis
Colitis, also referred to as ulcerative colitis, is a chronic disorder in which the mucous membranes which line the colon become inflamed and develop ulcers. Symptoms of colitis are bloody diarrhea, pain, gas, bloating, and/or hard stools. Since the colon muscles have to work hard to move the hard stools the colon wall can bulge out into small pouch-like projections called diverticula. It is in the diverticuli that stools can gather and cause gas, bloating, and pain.
Several factors need to be addressed when reversing colitis symptoms: foods, supplements, and stress.
Foods
The colitis diet involves eliminating the following foods from your diet: wheat, rye, corn, milk, peanuts, whole nuts and seeds (eat only ground ones such as almond butter), oranges, grapefruit, and refined white sugar. For information on some of these common allergy-causing foods click here.
Other food instructions: Eat melons only if you have an empty stomach (first thing in the morning, for example). Limit the consumption of, or eliminate, pork, beef, and lamb.
